How do you build a vision?  How do you identify what YOUR perfect business looks like?

Define it.  Put it on paper.  Make sure it’s YOURS and not someone else’s vision.  You don’t want it be just good, where people will read it and say, “Oh yes, that’s a good mission statement.”

Make it passionate.

It needs to be something that when you read it you say, “I LOVE this vision! I’m passionate about these values! I really love the idea of creating an employee experience that’s like THAT!  This is why I get out of bed in the morning!”

If you don’t have passion for your vision, who will?

It’s important to move past broad strokes of one big color that don’t really mean anything to anyone, including yourself.

Here are some tips to build a vision that drives you:

  • Identify your Core values-make sure you can reduce those down to 3-4 core values that drive all the decisions you make.
  • Ask yourself, “Why do we exist-what’s our purpose?” Why even have your company in existence?  If it’s just to make money, that’s fine – but identify what that MEANS.
  • Who do you serve?  What is your ideal target audience?
  • What is the client benefit and value from YOUR perspective – what do you want the client to perceive they are receiving of value by working with you – not what products you’re bringing to the table, but what value you can offer the client.
  • Think about your desired reputation – what do you want to be known for?
  • Plan the employee experience – how do you want your employees to intermingle into this vision? Are they expendable? Do you want long-term employees?  What is the employee experience you want to create?
  • What is the size or growth?

If you can break down these bullet points and address each one in your vision, you will have a very comprehensive and fulfilling vision statement for your business.
